Why Doctor Strange will Revitalize the MCU

2016 will bring many amazing superhero films, such as Captain America: Civil War, Batman V. Superman, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, Suicide Squad, and Gambit. Now, I don’t mean to say anything against Civil War, because I’m convinced that it will be incredible, But I think that Doctor Strange should be everyone’s chart topper for 2016 superhero films. Why, you ask? Because this one film, I believe, will rejuvenate the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the superhero genre as a whole. Listed below are the aspects of this film that will make it fresh and new.

Doctor Strange follows the new technique

Doctor Strange is going to be played by Benedict Cumberbatch, first of all. Marvel’s technique with Phase One was to cast small budget actors and hire big budget directors. Slowly, as Phase Two’s origin stories began (basically the second half of Phase Two), The studio switched to big budget actors and small budget directors (minus Guardians of the Galaxy, where every actor but the main character was big budget, and the main character and director were both very small at the time). Doctor Strange fits the bill, with Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role, and the film being helmed by Scott Derrickson. While Derrickson is not necessarily a small budget director, he is kind of out of left field, what with his past experience being almost exclusively horror films. However, Scott Derrickson, through social media, has already displayed his devotion to the project, and after extensive research on my part through many of his movies, I think that this film could not be in better hands.

The trippy aspects of the comics will not be tarnished

Last Saturday, at the D23 expo, Doctor Strange concept footage was shown. I was not able to be there, but I’ve read description after description. From what I’ve read, this film will be a visual masterpiece. To be expected are a lot of flying through space shots, cool magic visuals, and of course, probably a Cumberbatch shirtless scene. I expect we will be seeing a lot of things like the header photo for this article, and things like you might have seen during Interstellar. I’m hoping for something like this:

I’m positive that the trippyness of the original comics will push this movie from being a regular formulaic MCU title to an outstanding superhero film like we’ve never seen before. If you would like to read a great analysis of the footage shown, check out this article written by Kit Simpson Browne.

It will be an entirely new experience

To those of us who are familiar with the comics, we kind of know what to expect from a Doctor Strange film. Stunning visuals, interdimensional travel, cool spells, awesome fight sequences, etc. But to those who are not familiar with the character, there will be a certain shock factor that many will not be expecting. It was, from a business standpoint, the best possible move to nab Benedict Cumberbatch for the lead role. Due to Sherlock, The Imitation Game, and the rest of his impressive acting experience, almost every demographic is interested in him. So, casting him as such a Strange character (ha!) will make people curious. Curiosity makes a film a lot of money. And when people go to see this movie, they (I’m guessing here, I’m not precognitive) Will be blown away by how different it was than anything, superhero film or not, they have ever seen before. I have complete faith in Scott Derrickson, and I think he will make this into a beautiful film.
